Pablo Hervella qualified with a PhD. Degree in Physical Chemistry from the University of Santiago de Compostela, Santiago de Compostela (Spain) with a thesis entitled “Reactivity in polymeric micelles and microemulsions”. During his Postoctoral training at the Swiss Institute of Technology ETH, (Switzerland), and in the School of Pharmacy, University of Santiago de Compostela, Pablo's research was focused on the development of nanoparticles for the in vivo labelling of tumor cells, and on the encapsulation of antitumor drugs in nanoparticulate drug delivery systems. Specifically he has been interested in the development of fluorescent nanoparticles for the in vivo imaging of metastatic cells present in the lymphatic system. Research included the synthesis and characterization of nanoparticles aimed to target metastatic cells, in vitro cell uptake in several cell lines, analysis by Flow cytometry (FACS) and by microscopy.   Also, he designed new drug delivery systems for cancer treatment. This project was part of a collaboration with two pharmaceutical companies (PharmaMar S.A. and FAES FARMA S.A.) aimed to formulate poorly soluble drugs intended for oral and parenteral administration. New self-emulsifying drug delivery systems (SEDDS), nanocapsules and nanoparticles were developed. Since 2013, Pablo has been working in the Centre for Single Particle Science and Engineering (SPSE). His interest are the visualization of nanoparticle uptake in tumors by PET imaging, cellular uptake of fluorescent nanoparticles, formulation and in vitro evaluation of anticancer drugs and siRNA.
